About Turin

Torino is the capital of the Italian region of Piedmont, which in France and Switzerland borders.

In the 19th Century, it was some years the capital of Italy, before Florence, then Rome, which has been. From that time comes, many of the city dominant wide "Corsi", the tree-lined streets.

Turin is a beautiful city, but fewer shows the "typical" Italian design with small winding roads, as a broad-arranged perpendicular streets and large palaces.

The largest part of the city-Turin is the fourth largest city in Italy, with almost one million inhabitants, is left of the river Po. On the opposite shore of the hills are less densely built-up residential areas better (one lives in collina).

The Politecnico lies not in the center, but is well with buses to reach.

Search Room

The first hurdle that must be overcome normally, the search for a room. I was lucky, and the room was my predecessor Erasmus in Turin. Should we even find a room, you should do this before, in September, the first Italian courses for the exchange students. At best, but only in the last two August weeks, as previously many Italians on holiday.

They can be sent to the Ufficio Accoglienza Stranieri "contact that may directly provide room (at least, they have posted for the exchange students sought). If that does not succeed, you can posters in the corridors of the most Politecnico or in the canteens look. Finally, there is a weekly (?) Ad sheet "Secondamano. The prices are roughly the same level of Darmstadt. For example, I have a (very large) room in the immediate vicinity of the Politecnico about 550DM (280 €) is paid. But you can find a cheaper one. Frequently Italian students share a room.

First contact points on the "Police" / Facilities

The Erasmus office (located behind the "Aula Magna"). Here you get Others His matriculation and a diskette on which an e-mail, so that you his e-mail account (xyz@athena.polito.it) can use.

In Erasmus office must later, in front of every Bimester (the year is divided into four parts, which are longer than two months as the name suggests), the subjects indicate that you would like to prove.

Did you get his matriculation, it is to "Secreteria Studenti" go where a student ID in the form of a plastic card. Unfortunately, this plastic card Erasmus students only as a card; the functions of the self-service terminals are not to use, because you have no password.

Therefore, I must do this for each test required "Statino" at the secretariat to collect, rather it out themselves.

At the Ufficio Accoglienza Stranieri get some more or less interesting documents on the "police" and Turin. Moreover, to obtain two certificates.

One for the office of the "Edisu" (Corso Raffaello 20), a kind of Student Services, where his "canteen card" gets.

The other certificate is for the "ATM", the Turin transport businesses in Corso Francia 6 (stop Statuto). Here is an annual ticket for buses and trams, or buy a "Tessera" = badge, for monthly tickets for students to use. This costs about 15 € and it is in all "Tabacchi", and some newspaper and stationery shops to buy.

Unfortunately, both certificates from the supervising professor previously stamped and signed. It can, however, only once in office Erasmus try, which was also accepted at me.

In Corso Einaudi, several Copy shops. Moreover, there is a (Centro Stampa) on the campus, left of the main entrance. Often you can buy scripts there.

The computer rooms are relatively well equipped, but there are usually a few computers with the Internet access is allowed. For this must be the day before arrival. Or you go to 18:30 (Attention, large crowds) or Saturday morning, and then you can on all computers and surf. In addition, there is another scientist for the pool ( "CCLINF"). As Erasmus student might get but, even without science to study an account. There can be at any computer and still surfing.

Buses / trams

To again on the public to come back: the tram and bus system is well developed in Turin. The buses run frequently (at least from Monday to Saturday), and usually on time. At Politecnico one way, the lines 10 (from the Porta Susa train station), 33 (from the Porta Nuova train station), 58 and 16 (side entrance / stop Mediterraneo), and 12 (Stop Einaudi).

Essen

There are three cafeterias in Torino. The next is at the Politecnico in Corso Lione 6 (?). Very popular with Erasmus students is also in Via Principe Amedeo, in the center near the bottom.

When his personal smart card at the "Edisu" fetched, can be seen as Erasmus students very well (3000 lire / 1.5 €) eat.

Man gets a first response (mostly noodles), a second (usually meat), a side dish (such as lettuce), dessert (fruit), a drink and two buns. It will in any case (!) Tired. Moreover can be found on the first or second gear waive (not to ask me what), and then pay only 2000 lire. The food is better than in the Darmstädter cafeterias, but the courts come every two to three weeks. On Saturday evening, and there may also be eaten. Even Sundays / public holidays has one of the three canteens (in the monthly bills).

If you still want to cook, there are supermarkets, even some discount stores (such as Lidl, IN's, LD). The prices are about as in Germany. Moreover, there are lots of markets (morning, except on Sundays, Saturdays until 18:00), more than in any other Italian and probably also European big city. The grßten market can be found at the Piazza della Republica, which is also called the Porta Palazzo. There, in the area, at certain Saturdays and Sundays in the month, a popular flea market, "Balòn" instead.

In Piedmont put a lot of emphasis on good food. Especially around the Consolata (a church), there are many fine restaurants and Vinerie (wine bars).

Particularly noteworthy are the many cafes / bars in Torino. Man found on almost every street corner one. There can be little for money (about 1 €, in the center tend to German prices), a cappuccino and while still read the newspaper. Who Italian newspapers are still too hard, I can Flora cafe on the Piazza Vittorio (Veneto) recommend, very close to the Po, in which some foreign newspapers, as The FAZ there.

Leaving

Very near the Piazza Vittorio are the "Murazzi" THE place to leaving the evening. The "Murazzi" is a collection of restaurants, bars and discos, on the shores of Pos A further piece on Po, in the Parco del Valentino, is the "Imbarchino"; highly recommended!

In the center are a few other clubs. Furthermore, there is still some further outside clubs and bars. Unfortunately, one is to a car, as in Turin no night buses.

An important institution is the "Aperitivo", to which one in the early evening in the bars meets. It can be, if you drink something (usually there is a minimum order value) more or less vollessen (eg Panino Doc, Via delle Science or L'Obelix at the Piazza Savoia).

Sports

Sports: Is more expensive in Italy. Unisport The cost is not very much, but we must advance the doctor obtain a certificate that sport. This can be done again with the form E118 his health insurance "Agenzia Sanità Locale" ASL. I can not say exactly how, because I have not done it. One can of course also friends with football or basketball. But then one needs no certificate, but must first find a place that (is possible, requires a little search).

In Turin, there are a lot of museums. Absolutely recommendable is the Museo Nazionale del Cinema "is housed in the landmark of Turin, the Mole Antonelliana. It is only a few years old and recalls the role of Turin as a film city (especially in the early days of cinema). Well, I also like the "Museo dell'arte contemporanea" in the Castello di Rivoli, in a suburban location. Unfortunately, I have not the "Museo Egizio" seen, a museum of the ancient Egypt, which prides itself particularly Turin. With the "Abbonamento Musei" can, as often as you want all museums in the city and the surrounding castles. The card costs about 15 € for students (ID card from police or ISIC-Card ranges), and is available in almost all museums.

From Torino can quickly from the sea or in the mountains. The Ligurian seaside resorts are about 2 hours by train, ski resorts such as Sestriere and Bardonecchia 1-1.5 hours.

Conclusion

I am very glad that Erasmus year to have made. Therefore, I have many experiences that I think only the "everyday" life in this environment could offer. No holiday can stay. Finally, I have my Italian improved significantly. Therefore, I can only recommend everyone, a semester abroad / year of make, no matter where. But the best course in Torino ;-)
